Nikkei 225

Nikkei 225 is a stock market index for the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE). The Nikkei average is the most watched index of Asian stocks. It has been calculated daily by the Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei) newspaper since 1971. It is a price-weighted average (the unit is Yen), and the components are reviewed once a year.

The Nikkei 225 began to be calculated on September 7, 1950, retroactively calculated back to May 16, 1949.

The Nikkei 225 Futures, introduced at the Osaka Securities Exchange (OSE), Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) ,Singapore Exchange (SGX) , is now an internationally recognized futures index.

The Nikkei average hit its all-time high on December 29, 1989 when it reached an intra-day high of 38,957.44 before closing at 38,915.87.

Another major index for the Tokyo Stock Exchange is the Topix.

Topix

Topix, along with Nikkei 225, is an important stock market index for the Tokyo stock exchange in Japan, tracking all domestic companies of the exchange's First Section (1,700 companies as of October 31, 2006).

The index transitioned from a system where a company's weighting is based on the total number of shares outstanding (commonly called the float) to a weighting based on the number of shares available for trading (called the free float). This transition took place in three phases starting in October 2005 and being completed in June 2006. Although the change is a technicality, it had a significant effect on the weighting of many companies in the index because many companies in Japan have significant holds of shares of their business partners as a part of intricate business alliances, and such shares will no longer be included in calculating the weight of companies in the index.

JASDAQ Securities Exchange

The JASDAQ Securities Exchange (Jasudakku Sh?ken Torihikisho?) is a securities exchange headquartered in Tokyo, Japan.

JASDAQ is not related to NASDAQ in the United States, but operates an electronic trading system similar to NASDAQ.
